Roslyn Library Book Club

January's Read

A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain

by Robert Olen Butler

The Roslyn Library Book Club is a small and informal group of book-lovers that meets at the Roslyn Library each month to discuss the book they have chosen in common to read. The Roslyn Library provides multiple copies of the chosen book.

Book selections vary from non-fiction to classics, poetry and plays to science fiction and young adult literature.

Please join this lively group at any time during the year or month. The book talks are held on the first Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm at the library.

FREE and OPEN to the public.

Story Time at the Roslyn Library

Tuesdays
10:30 am @ the Library

The Roslyn Library offers story time for children of all ages every Tuesday at 10:30 am.

Our library's story times are informal programs that focus primarily on books. Occasionally the librarian will feel intrepid and sing a song or get the kids to dance or help with rhymes. Volunteer readers are often featured and they are appreciated by all.

Selected books vary from educational to whimsical, but all of them help build literacy skills. Story time children build the six skills they need to learn to read:
  • Print Motivation
  • Vocabulary
  • Print Awareness
  • Letter Knowledge
  • Narrative Skills
  • Phonological Awareness
Not only that, but story time is a great time to build social skills! The laid-back atmosphere means your temperamental two-year old will be welcome even on her grumpiest days.

You'll be surprised how fast the other kids role model proper library behavior as they play together with puzzles and toys in the sunny children's area.

And it's a great place and time to meet other parents, check out parenting resources, and browse for books, videos, CDs, and magazines for yourself and other members of your family.

Ready to Read in Roslyn

Ready to Read in Roslyn is an early literacy program of the Roslyn Library that aims to help develop pre-reading skills in young children, thus preparing them for success in school and beyond.

The program launched in 2008 with a storytelling and book giveaway event for area preschool children. This initial event and the launch of the program was made possible by a grant from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation through the Washington State Library. Matching funds were provided by the Cle Elum Kiwanis with supporting funds from the Friends of the Roslyn Library.

Later, the Roslyn Library held a special series of story times for children between 1 and 2 years old, developed by Dr. James Thomas, that provided parents and caregivers with resources and guidance to help their children get ready to read and learn while their children learn and have fun with one another.

Since 2010, the program has provided book bag giveaways for new babies born in the area. Bags include board books and information about early literacy, along with information about library resources for parents and their children.

The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Roslyn Library.

The Summer Reading Program

Every summer, the Roslyn Library holds a reading program that aims to keep kids of all ages reading throughout the summer months. The program offers incentive prizes for time spent reading, a raffle for completing reading goals, and features weekly story times, activities and events.

In the 2011 program, 66 kids read for over 1,700 hours in just 8 weeks, and weekly events were attended by 361 participants.

The 2012 theme is "Dream Big: Read!" and kicks off two weeks after school lets out. Check back in early June for more information and a schedule of free, summer events that will get your kids dreaming big.

World Affairs Program

The World Affairs Program provides the opportunity for our community to engage with other cultures. Professionals from across the globe visit Roslyn and share with us their culture and perspectives of the issues that we all face as part of the human race.

Each gathering is different, from a Q&A presentation by Sudanese health workers to a reception at the Roslyn Brewery for a group of young, emerging leaders from various countries in Europe to an informal dinner that provided an opportunity for citizen diplomacy with a group of international professionals from the UW's
Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program.

This series is made possible through a partnership with the World Affairs Council.

The One Book One Community program is a once a year, county-wide book club that encourages everyone in our community to read and talk about the same book. Copies of the selected book for the year are available to borrow from the city libraries. Community members spend the first part of each year reading the book, then the libraries host programming in March that relates to the themes that emerge from reading the book. It all makes for people spending more time reading a good book and more time talking to their friends and neighbors about the issues the book brings up.

In 2012, we'll be reading The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America, by Timothy Egan.

The One Book One Community Program is sponsored by The Friends of the Roslyn Library.

Armchair Travel Series

The Armchair Travel Series features the adventures of local residents, from solo wilderness excursions out our very own back door to guided tours to the Galapagos Islands. Every presentation features photographs and stories, often accompanied by samples of the food, drink and crafts of the region visited. Every presentation is completely different. Best of all, it doesn't cost a dime. You don't even need a passport! Call the library at (509) 649-3420 for upcoming presentations.

Roslyn Library Stitching Circle

A group of stitchers meets every Monday at 5:00 pm at the library. Some people are working on their own crocheting or knitting projects, embroidering, hand-sewing, even making rag rugs. Others want to learn or RE-learn how to stitch. Other times, the group decides on a project they can all work on together, such as the dish scrubbers they crocheted one year. Either way, its a great way to motivate yourself to start or finish a project, to learn a new craft, to relax, and to meet and chat with others. Participation slacks off in summer, but picks up again in the fall and winter months, especially just before the holidays. Join in anytime.

Roslyn Library Writers Circle

Writers of all ages, genres, and abilities are invited to come to the library every Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm from October through May to spend time writing. Writing prompts are available for those who need help opening the floodgates.

We will feature a facilitator and special topic on the third Tuesday of the month. Click here for the 2011-2012 schedule.

Whether you write a lot or a little, are a poet or a crime writer, and whether you need a block of time to actually do it, or need some feedback, inspiration, or encouragement, this weekly writers circle is one way to put your pen to paper while keeping company with other lovers of the written word.

Penn Place Outreach Project

Twice each month, the library leaves its walls to bring materials to the residents of Pennsylvania Place. Every 2nd and 4th Monday morning, we bring a new collection of books, audios and videos for residents to browse. They can check out new materials and return the ones they have borrowed at the same time and place, all without having to leave the Penn Place building.

The Roslyn Library aims to provide services to all ages and abilities, and this new project helps us in this goal by offering our services to seniors and the disabled in a more convenient and accessible way.
